A1-B1 Semi-intensive, Evening | Norwegian > Beginner | Norwegian (A1)
Norwegian course A1 Information
-
This A1 Norwegian course is suitable for complete beginners, as well as learners with very limited knowledge of Norwegian who want a structured, practical and effective start.
The course is ideal for adults living, working or studying in Norway, including expats, international employees, students, job seekers and newly arrived residents.
This beginner Norwegian course focuses on everyday communication, pronunciation, basic grammar and useful vocabulary you can use in real-life situations.
-
At A1 level, you will learn to understand and use simple Norwegian words, expressions and sentences in everyday situations.
By the end of the course, you will work towards being able to:
- introduce yourself and others
- ask and answer simple questions
- talk about family, work, free time, food, time, weather and daily routines
- understand and use common expressions for basic needs
- take part in short and simple conversations
- read and write short, simple texts in Norwegian
- understand basic Norwegian grammar and pronunciation
The goal is to help you feel more confident using Norwegian actively, not just understanding it passively.

The course combines speaking practice, listening exercises, reading, writing, pronunciation and grammar. Lessons are practical and varied, with tasks designed to help you use Norwegian in realistic everyday situations.
Our Norwegian courses are taught in small groups, usually with 3–6 students. This gives you more speaking time, closer follow-up from the teacher and a safer learning environment than in larger classes.
Your teacher will guide the group step by step, explain grammar clearly, correct mistakes in a supportive way and help you build confidence when speaking Norwegian.
-
Small groups are one of the main advantages of our Norwegian courses.
In a small class, you get:
- more time to speak Norwegian
- more individual attention from the teacher
- more opportunities to ask questions
- better interaction with other students
- a safe environment to practise, make mistakes and improve
For many beginners, this makes a big difference. It is often easier to learn Norwegian when you actually get to use the language actively in every lesson.
-
This course is available as a classroom course in Oslo. Some courses may also be offered online, depending on the course schedule and available dates.
Our classroom courses are held centrally in Oslo and are ideal if you prefer in-person teaching, direct contact with the teacher and a social learning environment.
Our online Norwegian courses are suitable if you need more flexibility but still want live teaching, teacher feedback and interaction with other students.
-
Course material is not included in the course fee.
We use Ny i Norge A1/A2, textbook and workbook, by Gerd Manne and Gölin Kaurin Nilsen. The books can be purchased from us or from a Norwegian bookseller.
The books are used together with the teacher’s explanations, speaking activities, listening exercises and additional classroom tasks.

This course can help you build the language foundation you need for further progression and preparation for official Norwegian language tests.
Language Power International AS is an HK-dir approved provider of Norwegian language training, and our course certificates document completed training. However, UDI has its own requirements for permanent residence and Norwegian citizenship, and these requirements often involve passing official tests in Norwegian and social studies.
We therefore recommend checking the latest requirements directly with UDI before applying.
